Suzann Pettersen: Can She Bounce Back, Yet Again, to Win a Second Major?

By: Karen Palacios-Jansen
Suzann Pettersen Suzann Pettersen returns to Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minnesota the site of this year's Women's U.S. Open, to try to capture the second major championship of her career and establish herself as one of the best women players in the world.  This is the same course where six years ago, she sank her now infamous
birdie putt and blurted out an expletive on national television. That putt brought her back from 5-down with five to play in Sunday singles matches and win a point for the European Solheim Cup team.

Although she faltered last week at the Wegman's LPGA tournament, Pettersen shot a 72 and surrendered a three-stroke lead to eventual winner Eun-Hee Ji, Pettersen has a way of bouncing back. Last year at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Pettersen was leading and poised to win her first tournament, but also collapsed with only 4 holes to play, finishing bogey, double bogey, bogey and missing a birdie putt on the last to force a playoff.  She then proceeded to win 5 tournaments in the remainder of the year including a major.

Pettersen, one of the longest hitters on tour, has worked hard to get to the top.  Last year, she underwent some what of a game makeover, enlisting the help of top professionals to her improve her mental game, body and swing. Plagued with injuries throughout her career, Pettersen, along with her team, have developed a total golf specific fitness routine that incorporates cardio, stretching and strengthening exercises, acupuncture and massage to perfect her performance, prevent injury and create longevity in her career.

In this month's issue of Golf Fitness Magazine, Pettersen and her trainer Dave Herman, who also works with 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman, demonstrate the workout that has helped her win over $1.8 million in one season.
Pettersen, who ranks consistently in the top 10 in driving distance on the tour, will certainly be a contender at this year's U.S. Open. If history repeats itself, last week's loss will only motivate her to win and bounce back, yet again.
