Book Review

The Golfer's Game Book by Bridget Logan

By: Karen Palacios-Jansen

 The Golfer's Game Book

Betting on the golf course makes the game a little more interesting and can help you improve your focus.  Even if you are playing for quarters, having a little wager adds meaning to your score and really makes a difference with your mind-set, which will ultimately improve your level of play.  A short tap in putt for par to win a friendly wager may all of a sudden look 10-feet long to the player who knows that he may have to shell out some money if he misses.  The average golfer loves to play their own betting games and every weekend thousands of golfers tee it up against their pals to play for money and watch each other choke under the pressure of a wager.  It also seems that the average golfer loves to watch the professionals sweat over putts that are worth big bucks too.

The made for TV Skins Games is only second in TV ratings to the Master’s.  So many people watched the Skins games that they created a Senior Skins Game and in 1990, Arnold Palmer made more money in one hole playing in the Skins Game ($200,000) than in any single year in his career.

You may not be playing for so much money, but if you and your golf gang like to wager a little money on the golf course, you will want to take a look at Bridget Logan’s book The Golfer’s Game Book. It is a compendium of golf games, side bets, practice exercises and alternative formats for groups of all sizes. With over 240 different games, you are sure to find a new game to take to the golf course.

One of the great features of Logan’s book is that it doubles a reference manual for golfers to carry in their golf bags.  She describes traditional games that have been around for years, with their variations such as Best Ball, Alternate Shot and Nassau and some games you might not of heard of such as Jackpot Golf where each hole is a separate progressive bet; Train, where players try to accumulate as many points as possible during a round; and Zoo also known as Dr. Doolittle and the Animal Game. In this game, the player that hits the ball into trouble gets stuck with the animal cut-outs Logan provides in the book.  You don’t want to be the player stuck with all the cut-outs at the end of the game or you will have to pay up or buy all the drinks after the round.

This is reference manual, so don’t try to read the book all at once or you will never remember all the games and how they are played. So even if you can’t make a par, you can still learn ways to make a few extra bucks.
