PGA Pro Ted Purdy![]() | GFM: What inspired you to become involved with golf? BP: I have always felt that golf is a perfect metaphor for the work that I do and have been doing for the past 40 years. You see, in truth, we do create our own world; we create our own results. The fact that our results are influenced by other people, conditions and circumstances…I believe that truth is an illusion. | |
| The entire universe operates by law and we truly do become what we think about. That is the one point that all great teachers agree upon although they disagree on virtually everything else. A pro golfer knows that it's never the conditions or circumstances, it's never the club and it's never the other players. The score is the golfer's own score. And, although I've always known that this would be a tremendous market place for my company, I've never really had to look for business and I've always been very busy. But then, Ted Purdy walked into my life. GFM: Why Ted Purdy? BP: I liked him. I'm extremely intuitive; it's a talent we all possess and that I have purposely developed over the years. I liked what I picked up from him. And I knew that since everything happens by law, he and I were meant to meet. In coaching, whether it's to help someone earn millions of dollars, improve their grades in school or improve their golf score, I require a commitment from the person I'm working with and they must do what I suggest. I know, to many people, that may sound arrogant and that's OK. I also know how to improve results but I only know one way … and that's by law, not by luck. I have worked with corporations and individuals all over the world for many, many years - I've never yet seen an individual fail, when they follow the path we lay down for them. Ted Purdy committed to doing that, so I committed to helping him. GFM: Where did you begin with Ted and how are you managing this relationship--conversations? Emails? Journaling? Daily? Weekly? BP: I began helping Ted improve his results in the very same way I would help a teenager improve their grades in school, a salesperson improve their sales, an individual improve their relationships or a corporation improve their profit. Everything begins in the same place when you deal with people - thought is the preamble to everything. Everything you see in the world around you, including the scores of professional golfers is the manifestation of thought. Everyone would be quick to admit, even though they have no understanding of how the mind functions, that Tiger Woods is in charge of Tiger Woods and his results prove it. A great teacher one time taught us, "By their fruits, you shall know them." I began to explain to Ted how to close the gap between knowing and doing. Ted knows how to birdie the holes, but he doesn't always do it. He knows how to play consistently, but he doesn't always do it. He knows what his attitude needs to be if he's going to be at the top of the leader board, but he doesn't always do it. I explained to Ted that there are two parts of the mind - one stores what we know, the other controls what we do. You can go right back to Solomon for good advice. He said, "In all you're getting, get understanding." Ted Purdy and I spent four days together after he was cut from the first FED EX CUP tournament. When he left, he had an understanding of how his mind functions and why he was getting the results he was getting. He also had an understanding of what he had to do to change his results. Ted and I communicate periodically by email and although we have not started journaling, it's something we'll get into in the near future. At times, we communicate daily and at other times every two or three days. BP: How do you coach Ted to clear his mind and move into a higher vibration when he's just shot, let's say, a double bogey? <- PREVIOUS NEXT -> 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | ||
